When a Buyer Asks ChatGPT for a Realtor, Whose Name Comes Up?
Buyers and sellers now ask AI assistants who to call. Here's how local agents get named — and what to check on your own site first.
Try this tonight: ask ChatGPT to recommend a real estate agent in your part of town. It will name someone. Maybe two or three someones. It will sound confident, and the people asking it — increasingly, your next sellers — take the answer seriously.
The referral hasn't died. It's moved. "Ask around" now includes asking an AI, and the AI can only recommend agents it can read.
Real estate has always been a name business. Yard signs, church, the sideline at Saturday soccer — you built a name the slow way. What changed is that there's a new place your name either shows up or doesn't, and most agents have never looked at it.
How an AI decides you exist
AI assistants don't browse the way people do. They read the underlying structure of your site: the plain-text facts, the structured data that says "this is a licensed agent, in this market, with these specialties." A site that's all photos and script-heavy widgets is gorgeous to a human and nearly blank to the machine. If it can't read you, it can't say you.
Three things you can check yourself
First, the lock icon: if your site still loads over plain http, browsers show "Not Secure" next to your name — a rough first impression for someone deciding who gets the listing. Second, search your own name plus your town in an AI assistant and read what it actually says. Third, look at your homepage and ask whether a stranger could tell, in one sentence of plain text, who you are and where you work.
Where this fits in the bigger picture
Being readable to AI is one piece of four — alongside a fast site, search presence, and staying in front of past clients (your referral engine) with something worth opening. The agents who win the next few years will be the ones whose four pieces agree with each other. That's the whole of what we do at Creo: run the four as one engine, for local businesses, from right here.
